“I can’t say it enough, but girls, if you want to get into a trade, do it — you won’t ever look back! And we are here to support you if you need help, especially GTNT Group. There is a good community of women in trades these days. Just reach out.”
Congratulations to Georgena James on completing her electrical apprenticeship! Georgena has built a reputation as a passionate advocate for women in non-traditional trades and a strong voice for VET career pathways. Throughout her apprenticeship, she has been awarded several scholarships supporting women in male-dominated industries, which she has used to further her skills. She is now enrolled in the Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control and the Advanced Diploma of ESI – Power Systems.
She believes the scholarships are a fantastic way to stay engaged in a future career, with the flexibility to use the support where it’s needed most. Georgena encourages all female apprentices to apply, noting that the scholarships are available through Charles Darwin University with financial backing from both NAWIC NT and the Office of Gender Equity and Diversity.
Moving to the Northern Territory for her apprenticeship, Georgena admits she didn’t know what to expect but has embraced the challenge. “I’ve worked in remote locations, endured some impressive storms, and helped repair the distribution grid. The NT has given me opportunities I never would have had on the east coast.”
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue developing her skills within Power and Water, particularly in generation and protection.
We wish Georgena all the best with what’s ahead!
