Ethan Bush joined the Prelude to the Future Program 6 last year, seeing it as an opportunity to challenge himself in a trade he’s passionate about.

Growing up working alongside his dad on creative projects, Ethan developed a love for hands-on work and was inspired by the strong support from his family to follow in their footsteps.

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 – 𝗶𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲. 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁.”

Though he initially felt anxious about starting his apprenticeship, Ethan now takes pride in how far he’s come. He’s grateful for the practical skills he’s developed and often encourages his mates to consider apprenticeships as a rewarding alternative to traditional schooling.

Some of the highlights of Ethan’s apprenticeship so far include the Berrimah McDonald’s project, which spanned four to five months. He valued being part of the build from start to finish, learning something new at each stage. Another standout was working on St Vincent de Paul’s – a project supporting people experiencing homelessness. For Ethan, contributing to a build that directly benefits the community was especially rewarding.

At just 17 years old, Ethan’s dedication and growth were recognised when he was named the Shell Prelude to the Future - Outstanding Apprentice of the Year at the 2025 GTNT Group Awards.

The Prelude to the Future Program is jointly funded by Prelude FLNG, operated by Shell, Department of Education and Training, Charles Darwin University and GTNT Group.
