“I hope to inspire all Indigenous persons that it is possible to achieve anything you set your mind to. Just reach out and go for it!”
Jamil Turpin was born in Atherton, Queensland. In 2010, he moved to the Northern Territory and worked as an all-rounder at Nitmiluk National Park. By late November, his hard work paid off, and he was offered a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. Despite the distance from his family, Jamil seized the opportunity.
During this time, he met his wife, Wyonna, who also worked at the Nitmiluk Centre. Jamil completed his apprenticeship and continued at Nitmiluk as a Sous Chef for several years.
Seeking a new challenge, Jamil worked as a labourer with Jawoyn Contracting. He found the construction industry enjoyable and started searching for apprenticeships in Katherine. An advertisement for an Electrician Apprenticeship caught his eye. Although initially uncertain about his ability to undertake this trade, his wife reminded him of his potential. He applied and to his surprise, he was invited for an interview the same day.
He was initially hosted to Nilsen and then to ESPEC at the RAAF Base in Tindal, appreciating the valuable learning experiences at both companies. Jamil is now hosted to Benash Contracting in Katherine, where he enjoys his work.
Jamil aims to inspire Indigenous people to pursue their dreams. The highlight of his apprenticeship has been working with many knowledgeable and supportive people. He recently won the Outstanding Apprentice Stage 1 – Top End Region at the GTNT Group Awards.
